Correct a document that is out for signature

Guide 3 min read 5 steps Updated 1 Nov 2026 Copy link

Cancel a signature request that has a mistake in it and reissue a corrected version with everything you had entered, without creating a duplicate or confusing the signers.

Sometimes a mistake only shows after you have sent a contract for signature: a wrong figure, a missing co-owner, a clause that needs changing. Do not send a second copy. Correct document cancels the current request straight away and opens a new version with everything you had entered, so you fix only what is wrong and send again.

If the mistake is only a signer's email address, you do not need to correct the document at all. Edit the address from the signer's menu and resend their invitation.

Before you start

  • The deal with the document out for signature. You find it on the deal's Signatures tab.
  • What needs to change, and whether anyone has already signed, because they will need to sign the corrected version again.
  1. Decide what kind of fix it is

A wrong email address, an invitation that did not arrive or a signer who has gone quiet are fixed from the signer's menu, without touching the document. Use Remind, resend the invitation, edit the email or copy the signing link.

A mistake in the document itself, in a figure, a name, a date or a clause, needs Correct document.

  2. Open the document menu

On the deal's Signatures tab find the document row. Open its menu and choose Correct document.

  3. Let the current request cancel

The current signature request is cancelled straight away. Signing links that were already sent stop working, so nobody can sign the old version by mistake. Anyone who had already signed will need to sign the corrected version.

Note Tell your client a corrected copy is coming, so the cancelled invitation does not worry them.

  4. Fix the new version

A new version opens in the contract builder with everything you had entered. Change what was wrong and check the contract on the right as it updates. If the error came from a party's details, correct them on the Parties tab as well, so later documents are right too.

  5. Review and send again

Click Review & send, check the signers and the signing order, and click Send for signature. Fresh invitations go out in order. The cancelled version stays in the deal's history, so the record shows what was sent and when.

Good to know

  • Read the preview before you send. The review screen is the cheapest place to catch a mistake. Correcting after sending is quick, but it costs your client a second signing.
  • Never send a second copy alongside the first. Two live versions of the same contract is how the wrong one gets signed. Correct document keeps only one live.
  • An email fix is not a correction. Edit the address from the signer's menu and resend. The document and any signatures already on it are kept.
  • Fully signed documents cannot be corrected. If a completed document needs changing, prepare an amendment from the forms library instead.
